The federal False Claims Act has proven to be one of the most effective tools in fighting Medicare fraud, defense contractor fraud and other types of fraud perpetrated against the federal government. We’ve even used it to fight environmental crimes.
This statute allows “whistleblowers” who have knowledge of the facts to file lawsuits on behalf of taxpayers against companies and individuals that have cheated the government. Since 1986, when the statute was broadened, the United States has recovered more than $14 billion that it has paid for fraudulent billing. The whistleblowers who obtained those rewards for all taxpayers have received more than $2.2 billion for their efforts.
Our lawyers have handled qui tam (whistleblower) cases involving a wide variety of frauds on the government, including environmental wrongdoing, Medicare fraud, and Medicaid fraud. We’ve also handled “reverse” qui tam cases, where the wrongdoer has failed to pay the government amounts it owes.
